Spinels
Spinel is a magnesium and aluminum oxide, MgO Al2O3.
The name “spinel” comes from the Latin “spinella,” which means “little thorn” due to its crystalline shape. Spinels belong to the cubic system and are typically found in the form of well-formed octahedral crystals, although other crystalline forms may also be observed (twins or worn pebbles). They can be colorless but are most commonly found in a range of colors including red, pink, violet, blue, green, black, and brown.
There are also lab-created spinels that can exhibit a wide variety of vibrant colors. The hardness of spinels is 8 on the Mohs scale, making them relatively scratch-resistant gemstones. Their beauty and durability make them a popular alternative to precious gemstones such as rubies and sapphires. Red spinel, sometimes referred to as “spinel ruby,” is one of the most highly regarded varieties and has often been mistaken for ruby in the past due to their color similarity. However, spinelles possess their own distinct optical properties that differentiate them from rubies.
